Marvin Kibirige carded a three-under-par 68 to lead the inaugural MTN Pro-Tee Series at Entebbe Club, edging a competitive field after the opening round.

ENTEBBE, Uganda — Professional golfer Marvin Kibirige produced a composed opening-round performance to seize the early lead at the inaugural MTN Pro-Tee Series tournament at Entebbe Club, carding a three-under-par 68 on the opening day of competition.

Representing Mary Louise Simkins Golf Club in Namulonge, Kibirige relied on consistent ball striking and steady putting to navigate the challenging conditions at the par-71 course and establish a one-shot advantage over his closest rivals.

Kibirige's round featured six birdies, including scores on the par-5 first, 11th, and 18th holes, as well as birdies on holes three, 12, and 14. Despite encountering difficulties with the windy conditions and the course's dry surfaces, he maintained his composure to finish atop the leaderboard.

Speaking after his round, Kibirige described his performance as measured rather than aggressive, noting that patience and course management played a significant role in his success.

The Ugandan professional, who is preparing for a return to competition on the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI), said the MTN Pro-Tee Series provides an ideal opportunity to sharpen his competitive edge ahead of international assignments.

Rodell Gaita and Vincent Byamukama finished the opening round tied for second place after both posted two-under-par 69s. Joseph Mawejje occupied fourth place at level-par 71, while Silver Opio, Abraham Ainamani, and David Kamulindwa shared fifth position after carding one-over-par 72.

The inaugural MTN Pro-Tee Series has attracted some of Uganda's leading professional golfers and aims to strengthen the country's competitive golf landscape through a structured tournament calendar and season-long Order of Merit competition.

With three rounds still remaining, Kibirige faces a strong challenge from an experienced chasing pack eager to claim the first title of the newly launched professional series.
