MTN Pro-Tee Series Launches to Give Uganda’s Professional Golfers a Bigger Stage

15 June 2026By UPGA

Uganda’s professional golf scene has entered a new era with the launch of the MTN Pro-Tee Series at Entebbe Club. The new circuit brings structure, competition, and opportunity to local professionals through a season-long format and meaningful prize stakes.

MTN Pro-Tee Series Launches to Give Uganda’s Professional Golfers a Bigger Stage

Uganda's professional golfers have often spoken about the need for more competitive tournaments, better earning opportunities, and a platform that can help them grow their careers. That conversation took a positive turn this week with the launch of the MTN Pro-Tee Series, a new professional golf circuit backed by MTN Uganda, Entebbe Club, and the Uganda Professional Golfers Association (UPGA).

Launched at Entebbe Club, the series marks a significant investment in professional golf and signals a new chapter for players looking to compete regularly and build sustainable careers in the sport.

More Than Just Another Golf Tournament

For the past three years, MTN Uganda has played an active role in supporting golf through events such as the MTN Monthly Tee and the MTN Tee of Tees. Those tournaments helped grow the game among amateurs and corporate golfers, but the professional side of the sport still needed a dedicated platform.

The MTN Pro-Tee Series aims to fill that gap.

Instead of a one-off event, the series introduces a structured competition that will run throughout the year, giving professionals multiple opportunities to compete, earn prize money, and improve their rankings.

For many players, that's exactly what has been missing.

A Timely Boost for Professional Golf

Uganda has produced talented golfers over the years, but professional players often face limited tournament opportunities compared to their counterparts in more established golfing nations.

The launch of the MTN Pro-Tee Series changes that.

According to the Uganda Professional Golfers Association, the number of registered professional golfers has more than doubled over the last few years, growing from 29 members in 2022 to over 60 today. That growth reflects the increasing interest in professional golf, but it also highlights the need for more competitive events.

The new series gives those golfers something to work towards throughout the season.

How the Series Will Work

The inaugural MTN Pro-Tee Series will feature three major tournaments during the year, all hosted at Entebbe Club.

Players will compete in 72-hole events, similar to professional tournaments played on major tours around the world. Rather than focusing on a single event, golfers will accumulate points throughout the season as they chase the MTN Pro-Tee Order of Merit title.

This format rewards consistency. Players who perform well across multiple events will have a better chance of finishing at the top of the rankings and claiming the overall title.

The opening tournament is scheduled for June, followed by additional events in September and December.

Prize Money That Matters

One of the most encouraging aspects of the series is the commitment to meaningful prize money.

The opening event carries a purse of UGX 15 million, while the second leg will offer UGX 20 million. Organisers have also indicated that the season finale will feature an even bigger prize fund.

For professional golfers, prize money is more than just a reward for winning. It helps cover travel expenses, training costs, equipment, and other expenses that come with competing at a high level.

The introduction of larger purses sends a strong message that professional golf is being taken seriously.

A Chance to Raise Uganda’s Competitive Standards

Regular competition is one of the most important ingredients in player development.

When golfers compete consistently against strong fields, they improve their decision-making, mental toughness, and ability to perform under pressure. Those experiences become invaluable when representing Uganda in regional and international competitions.

The MTN Pro-Tee Series provides exactly that environment.

By creating a schedule of high-level tournaments, the series gives professionals the opportunity to sharpen their skills while measuring themselves against some of the country's best players.

Over time, that can only benefit Ugandan golf as a whole.

Technology Meets the Fairways

The partnership also introduces a digital element that reflects MTN Uganda's broader vision.

Prize winnings will be paid through MTN Mobile Money, making transactions faster, safer, and more convenient for players.

While it may seem like a small detail, it highlights how technology continues to shape modern sport and how digital solutions can simplify processes for athletes and organisers alike.

What This Means for the Future of Golf in Uganda

The launch of the MTN Pro-Tee Series is good news not only for professionals but for the entire golf community.

Young golfers now have a clearer pathway into the professional ranks. Golf fans have more tournaments to follow. Sponsors have a stronger platform to support. Clubs benefit from increased activity and visibility.

Most importantly, professional golfers finally have a season-long competition that rewards performance and consistency.

For years, Uganda's golf community has discussed the need for a stronger professional circuit. The launch of the MTN Pro-Tee Series is a major step towards making that vision a reality.

As the first players prepare to tee off, there is a growing sense of excitement around what this series could become. If the early momentum is anything to go by, the MTN Pro-Tee Series could play a significant role in shaping the future of professional golf in Uganda for years to come.
